Where tradition blends with style.

preserving the fine and rare

It all started with a deep passion for rare bottles—
a love for collecting that soon evolved into a mastery of fine wines and rare whiskies. From there, it grew into something much bigger. What began as a personal pursuit quickly became an exploration into the world of excellence, curation and culture, leading to a journey that spans continents and reshaped the market.

London: The Beginning

For James Woodhead, whisky has never been just a drink - it’s a story, a craft, an experience. His journey began in the world of fine wines and whisky, working with one of the UK’s most esteemed wine merchants. It was here that he developed a deep appreciation for heritage, craftsmanship, and the nuances that make a great whisky truly exceptional.

Hong Kong: The Revolution

A decade in the City led him to Hong Kong, where he spent seven years working and immersed in Asia’s vibrant whisky and wine scene. The region became his passion, a place where wine, whisky, art, and the auction world fuelled his inspiration. It was there that the idea of creating something of his own began to take shape, something that would blend his passion for whisky with the rich storytelling of fine art; a project to bring together his Scottish heritage and Asia.

Madison Wine Goes Public

During his time in Hong Kong, James played a pivotal role in the rise of Madison Wine, a business at the forefront of the region’s fine wine and spirits market. In 2015 after only 4 years in business, led by James, Madison Wine was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, raising HK$56.3 million. Through bold and innovative trading strategies James and Madison set new benchmarks for the industry.

Setting New Standards

James was at the heart of some of the most significant whisky collections ever assembled. In September 2017, he curated the first-ever complete 58-bottle set of Ichiro’s Malt Card Series, an extraordinary feat that gained global recognition. The set was featured in Forbes and later sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, cementing its status as one of the most coveted and ultra-rare collections in the world. Beyond Japanese whisky, James was also instrumental in putting together the most extensive single vertical of Macallan 18 Year Old - a remarkable lineup dating back to the 1954 release.

Coming Home

Returning to London, James reconnected with old friends and made new ones who shared his vision. Alex Galway, a lifelong schoolmate and whisky enthusiast, immediately saw the potential. James Sampson, a like-minded connoisseur with a deep appreciation for rare and collectible spirits, completed the trio. Over countless drams and conversations, they realised what they wanted to achieve.

London: Expanding Horizons

What had once been just an idea - a conversation over whisky, a shared passion - was starting to gain traction. By 2023, James Woodhead, Alex Galway, and James Sampson weren’t just discussing whisky; they were shaping what would become One8Nine.

Today: A New Chapter

Named after the total number of bottles from their first release One8Nine was built on the foundations of heritage and innovation. It’s a brand that carries a deep respect for Scotland’s whisky traditions while embracing the influences of Asia’s artistry and craftsmanship. Sourcing only the finest and rarest of casks that have been preserved perfectly through history. One8Nine offers outstanding examples of single malt whisky crafted to perfection. A collaboration between three friends, bound by experience, passion, and a belief that great whisky should tell a story.
